#We always hear it. You had a moment. This year, we didn’t.
- In a previous article I wrote about the talent in season 9. Where did it fit amongst all the talent in seasons past? I would have to put it at least 3rd or 4
th. So why was this season so off kilter and mostly uninteresting? It was as if the season were rushed this year for one. But I think every contestant was trying more to not get slammed by the judges than taking risks and showing us what they could do. For the first 5 or 6 weeks
Crystal, while she didn’t take any risks she also didn’t cow tow to the judges.
Lee struggled to just put one song together in tune. He only managed that once.
Siobhan was the wild card this season taking a different kind of risk every week but never quite putting it all together before it was too late.
Aaron, Mike Casey Katie, Didi, Paige, Tim, and the rest just didn’t seem to gel.
When contestants don’t take any big risks the chances of a moment go quietly into the night. The closest thing to a risk
Crystal took was singing without her guitar. She almost had a moment with
“Up the Mountain”. Lee never took one chance that I could see. His almost moment came when he sang his only song entirely in tune
“The Boxer”. But even in that there was zero risk.
Casey had 2 almost moments with “
Jealous Guy” and
“Don’t”. Siobhan was the only one this season that took risks and took them virtually every week. The biggest risk of all
“Through the Fire” was not only her biggest risk it was her biggest disaster. The closest she came to a moment was
“House of the Rising Sun” and
“Paint it Black”. And for my money
“Paint it Black” was the closest anyone came to a moment this season.
Aaron, Katie, Andrew, Didi, Paige, Tim, Lacey, and
Mike never came very close. I know, Kara cried when
Mike sang
“Women’s Work” but I think she was on some meds at the time.
When we look back at the previous 8 seasons even the worst of them, 3 and 6, were ripe with moments. Here are just some of the moments from seasons past.
Season 1:

Season 3:
Fantasia’s “Summertime” (Probably one of the top 3 of all time and arguably #1. This from a guy who didn’t like her) “I Believe” Diana’s “Broken Wing”, “Enough is Enough” top 3 version of “Don’t Cry Out Loud” Amy Adam’s “Sin Wagon” Jasmine’s “Inseparable” Latoya’s “Don’t rain on My Parade”, “All By My Self” , “Somewhere” Jennifer’s “Circle of Life” Not bad for the still worst season ever.
Season 4:

There were a few that approached moments this season but not quite. So when we get down to it, the lack of or amount of moments is the determining factor in what makes the season good or worthy. All the top 12, even
Turban were quality. That can’t be said for any other season. Not one. This season was set up to be the best but the wheels just came off or never really got spinning. Had
Katelyn Epperly,
Lilly Scott, or possibly
Alex Lambert made the top 12, who’s to say we could have had a moment.
Katelyn’s “The Scientist” came very close as did
Lilly’s “A Change..” Only
Melinda Doolittle was more consistently good than
Crystal.
But hey, just because the season didn’t produce any moments who’s to say post Idol some will.
Carrie only had one moment her entire season and look where she is now.
Bo loaded up on moments and look where he is. So just because the show’s contestants weren’t quite the shiners of seasons past maybe they will be the career shiners. Do you agree I have found the problem with season 9? Let me know in my poll.
On a side note I got an email yesterday stating that
Siobhan got a record deal from 19E. I have yet to be able to confirm this but be on the lookout. Let me know if it in fact is true. I can then stop whining about her being booted by a high tech clerical error.
