The top 5 plus one sing for their lives Bon Jovially

#144 - 1--ed--The top 5 plus one sing for their lives Bon Jovially--2007-05-02 01:37:39

#I was dreading tonight because not one of our Idols is anywhere close to rocker. But they knocked me off mine.
- I’ll admit, I’m no rock fan but I can enjoy it if it’s done right. And tonight it was by all. Yes, even Jordin. I say even Jordin because she got bashed by all for the first time except maybe Paula. I was very pleasantly surprised just like Country week. Phil continues to do well after so many rocky performances and bottom 3 appearances. Melinda is…..well Melinda, perfect in every way. Lakisha came back from the dead. I thought Chris did Chris Daughtry’s staple proud and Jordin took a chance and while it wasn’t her best it certainly wasn’t as bad as the judges let on or my buddy Sam. But Blake stole the show. Read on and let’s get graded.

Phil “I’ve changed my mind I want to stick around” Stacey: “Blaze of Glory”
I am not familiar with much Bon Jovi because that’s about the time I quit listening to the radio.  But Phil did a great job and looked comfortable. He hit all the notes and I’m not sure he was acting like Simon said. He looked and sounded genuine to me. Grade B+

Jordin “Catch me if you can” Sparks: “Living on a Prayer”
Maybe I’m dumb. Maybe I’m stupid. Or maybe I’m deaf but I thought Jordin took a hard chance and won. She could have played it safe (and maybe in hindsight should have) sang one of Bon Jovi’s ballads like KiKi. But this showed that she is not afraid to take a chance and gamble. Gamble she did but I did not think it was near as bad as everyone else said. She looked so cool and while she didn’t hit every note the ones she really went for she blew out of the park. I loved her attitude and her self deprecation. She is a solid winner. I am going to grade her a little on a curve because she was totally outside her comfort zone but still didn’t crash and burn. Jordin made the Idolhead enjoy it. I don’t think this night will hurt her at all. Grade B-

Lakisha “I’m not going anywhere” Jones: (It’s Jones JLynn. Yeah Jones is kind of a hard name to remember) “This Ain’t a Love Song”
This reminded me of the Lakisha of old. There were some pitchy moments but overall this was very good. It’s as if Lakisha felt this was her last week and just came out like she didn’t give a rat’s ass and just did it. As she began to sing my wife and I said at the same time “I wonder why Jordin didn’t sing this”. Well Lakisha did and while I don’t really think it can save her, it damn sure won’t hurt. Grade A-

Blake “Don’t count me out” Lewis: “You Give Love a Bad Name”
Someone sang this last year but I can’t remember who. It doesn’t matter anyway. After what Blake did to it I would forget about them anyway. This was Blake’s best. How damn cool was that? My wife wants to marry him. I guess if I were married to me I would want to marry him too. Blake was vocally spot on and his beat box twist was something not soon forgotten on any Idol show. Randy was right. This was the most original take on any song in Idol history. Blake has been saving his beat boxing for just the right times. Not overdoing it makes it more special and enjoyable. This was the bomb and put on another record Blake. Grade A++ I couldn’t have loved it anymore.

Chris “Chris doing Chris” Richardson: “Wanted Dead or Alive”
Another sparkling performance tonight. I have liked Chris since he sang “The Boss” Diana Ross night. This was as good as Chris Daughtry’s in a different way. He put his own spin and touch. And hit me if you must, in a way I liked it better. It was less rock and more soul. He gave this performance like he thought it woulds be his last. Good on ya Chris. Grade A-

Melinda “There’s nothing I can’t do” Doolittle: “Have a Nice day”
Anytime I can listen to Melinda I have a nice day as I think everyone does. You know there is really nothing left to say about Melinda. I could just Xerox my comments from each previous week and just paste them in. She is just that great. And as I said in my Melinda/Jordin column she is the best there has ever been on Idol. I don’t think there are any professional singers I am as comfortable watching as her. I just know every week, no matter what the challenge she will conquer it with minimal effort. Whether Melinda wins or not she most certainly deserves to. As for tonight, she admitted she was no rocker and the thing she did with the rocker sign with her hands was Melinda funny. Again she hit every note and continued her quest to give a vocal master class again this week. And when her CD comes out if America doesn’t buy it in droves they are on the wrong planet. Because this is planet Melinda.  Grade A++ She gets extra points for being way out of he comfort zone too.

I am so glad the pimp spot has never been wasted this season. Even Sanny delivered on JLo night. If this is really the most boring season ever, bore me for the next 10 years please. How often do we get to see the top 6…….. twice and watch them deliver like this. I think this was the best night so far this season and when the worst of the night (very relative term here) was Jordin you know the night was great. I thought it would be the worst. I thought the same would be said of Country night and it was great too.

On a night when two will be leaving, I don’t think the worst performer will have to worry. Considering that last week’s votes will be added to this week’s nothing will change significantly. And when the cameras panned the audience after Jordin’s performance I saw two good reasons she won’t be hurt by tonight. It was two 9-10 year old girls screaming their freaking heads off. When you are a female Idol and you get that group, you are sailing baby. And the way Jordin took her critique, I guarantee won votes.

So I, the Idolhead, don’t think this night will change anything. It still looks like the top 3 of Melinda, Jordin and Blake. If there is a bottom 3 it will be, well…. the rest. I still think Lakisha and Chris will be leaving. Although there is that possibility Lakisha’s performance could win her one more week. I do think Melinda, Jordin, and Blake are untouchable. If any of these three end up in the bottom that will be the real shocker of the season.

One more thing, will the two bootees sing a duet tomorrow night after we hear Chris Daughtry sing?

Don’t forget to register to vote on your Idol winner’s single starting tomorrow night on the American Idol official website which you can get to by clicking it in the upper left hand corner of this page in the "Other Idol websites" box. How's that for a run on sentence? And if t you haven’t already, read my article on the contest "AI 6 songwritng contest...." posted today.
