IdolHeadEd.com - Worst season ever? Not hardly…at least talent wise.

Everyone knows how much I liked Siobhan but she is not the only reason I believe this season is not the worst. Not even close.

If we look at the top 12 from this season, they stack up well talent wise with any other season. I didn’t think Bucky Covington was anywhere near as well as his 8^th place finish but he has done well in spite of it. Season 5 was the most loaded of any season. It’s pretty inarguable. The top nine all got record deals. 10 of the contestants from season 5 recorded CDs selling 9,537,900 to this point. No other season comes close in number of contestants CDs.

But with all the slamming this season is getting I wanted to take a look back and see why. Look at this list; Crystal, Lee, Casey, Mike, Aaron, Siobhan, Turban, Andrew, Katie, Didi, Paige, Lacey, Lilly, Katelyn and Alex. Of this group only Paige could be considered non worthy. Look at this list from seasons past; Sanjaya, Scott Savol, Jim Verraros, Nikki, A.J. Gil, Julia Damato, Carmen, Corey, Charles Grigsby, Leah LaBelle, Matt Rogers, Camille Valesco, JPL, John Stevens, Jasmine Trias, Lindsey Cardinale, Mikalah, Jessica Sierra, Melissa McGhee, Kevin Covais, Bucky, Kellie, Brandon Rogers, Chris Sligh, Stephanie Edwards, Gina Glockson, Haley Scarnato, Sanjaya, Chris Richardson, Amanda Overmyer, Chikeze, Ramiele, Brooke White, Krysty Lee (I still like her) Jason Castro, Michael Sarver, Megan Joy, Jorge Nunez, Jasmine Murray, Scott McIntyre, and Lil Rounds. Not to say all of these contestants were bad but I think all of this season’s top 12 with only a couple of exceptions are better. The closest thing to a Sanjaya was Tim and he vastly improved as time went by. And I would stack Crystal and Siobhan against the very best of all seasons past.

So with all this talent, why does this season seem so lackluster? It’s as much about chemistry and diversity, song choice, and luck. This is the first season in the history of Idol we had any, much less three, Indie type singers. Although Crystal and Siobhan are sort of in the same arena they are quite different. We have a similar Didi type in Brooke White but Didi is a much stronger vocalist. I think of all the seasons this group is the worst at picking the right songs. Crystal would be the exception. Thus she is still in the competition and going strong. Lately though that hasn’t been her strong suit. Overall though the group as a whole have just never put a great night together yet. Even season three had a fantastic top 12 night. So unless we get some real magic on Tuesday, although it really is too late now, this season, with all its talent will go down as a lost season, but not the worst.
