justplainidol writes Michael and Ryan ready for the show with pedicures and manicures, while Jermaine shows us what not to wear.
So the girls get an extra day's rehearsal, with the exception of Crystal who is apparently quite ill. Let's hope she is able to perform tomorrow in what would be an unprecedented Idol moment if she couldn't. Would America get an opportunity to vote for her even if she couldn't perform, per doctor's orders? Will the nature of her illness be exposed? We'll know 24 hours from now. In the meantime, the men brought redemption, validation and religion(?) to the show. Here's how I saw it, worst to first.
10. Jermaine Sellers - What's Goin' On. Jermaine is trusting in God that he will return next week. Jermaine will need divine intervention in order to return next week. Pay attention, Jermaine. Tyler wears his bathrobe to rehearsal and leaves that very week. You wear your onesie and.... I rest my case.
9. Todrick Hall - What's Love Got to Do with it. You read it right. Todrick sang Tina Turner. Six short days after he butchers Kelly Clarkson. What do you have against women, Todrick? And the only AI contestant more over the top than Todrick in the history of the show was Sanjaya. This is not a compliment.
8. Aaron Kelly - My Girl. As I said last week, I cannot get behind a 16-year-old male contestant. It feels creepy to me. Even putting aside my bias, this performance was not very good. The vibrato sounded like so many nerves, and the song should be retired from the show anyway. It's too old-fashioned.
7. Andrew Garcia - You gave me Something. The obscure (at least to me) song titles aren't working for Andrew. I understand he wants to be current and different. I see a judges' favorite free-falling, spinning out of the competition.
6. John Park - Gravity. John's vocals were much better this week, but he had the unenviable position of following up a really great performance with a bland look (borrowing Simon's white tee shirt) and slow tempo song. I'm wondering why John got a double-dose of advice from the panel? I think John has lost confidence, and still the judges keep piling on the criticism.
5. Tim Urban - Come on get Higher. This was enjoyable! Tim had a lot more energy and confidence than last week. I get Ellen's point, though. Tim's strong suit isn't his singing, so placing him much further in a singing competition doesn't bode well for Tim. He got the love from Simon, though, so he can leave with something positive tonight.
4. Casey James - I Don't Wanna Be. Had Casey ever watched the show, he would have known he couldn't possibly hold a candle to Elliot Yamin's performance of this song, even with killer electric guitar skills. The guitar playing was much better than the singing.
3. Alex Lambert - Everybody Knows. Not since the Miracle on Ice of the 1980 Olympics has America witnessed a more improbable success story than Alex Lambert, rising from the door mat of Season 9 to, well, the Persian Rug of Season 9. I am so impressed that Alex even showed up this week, and then performed really quite well. And he could not be cuter. I wouldn't be surprised if he is the top vote getter this week, if we were privy to such statistics.
2. Michael Lynche - This is a Man's World. Michael was just as at ease with performing this song as he was dead-lifting Aaron Kelly - a walk in the park, right? He looked the part of a star, and he sang very well, showing more range than I had heard up to this point. Not many first-of-the-night spots are memorable, but this one was very much so. I think we can all drop the "Big Mike" moniker. He is much more than a big man.
1. Lee Dewyze - Lips of an Angel. I was prepared to dish on this performance when Lee walked out among the "stars" in the creepy blue lighting of the stage. That could not have been his idea. Lee has a lot of power to his voice; I would appreciate a little more nuance, ala David Cook. Lee made the most of the pimp spot tonight. Tonight Michael and Lee were mahogany bookends holding up tattered paperbacks.
I believe Jermaine and John will be leaving the show this week, John because he's forgettable, and Jermaine because God has bigger issues than keeping him on the show.
