IdolHeadEd.com - May I have 8 girl favorites this season….please? Siobhan Magnus anyone?

This weekend I reviewed the season thus far. I must say I have changed my mind on a few contestants and the season as a whole.

I just read an article that had Simon saying he wishes he could have more time to have picked this season’s cast. I now see why. There were some great performances that didn’t land some talented girls in the top 12 girls. But more importantly the ones who did make it are more impressive to me now.

I picked my top 12 last article. Here are the girls I picked to make it; Didi Benami, Ashley Rodriguez, Crystal Bowersox, Katie Stevens, Lilly Scott, and Lacey Brown. I thought this was a safe bet and it still might be but after a few re-watches of the last two shows, I may have to change my mind. I’m not sure if I missed it or it just didn’t register at the time but Siobhan Magnus’s performance of “Livin’ for the City” was exceptional to say the least. When she busted an Adam Lambert like high note at the end I was like ….what!? But the preceding verse was awesome as well. So I did a little research and found some of this not so secret not so shy woman on YouTube. This is just a sample: Siobhan on stage We have seen nothing yet. I was thinking Siobhan was too shy or too inexperienced for this big stage. She’s been acting/singing for a while. Since Idol kind of shoved her off to the side I thought she was some of that seasoned cannon fodder. No more. I believe America will see something on Tuesday that will blow them away, a la Allison last year. I love surprises especially if they are good. Siobhan is. At the very least we will be seeing Siobhan on Broadway for years to come.

Lacey Brown, while not shocking me as much, is another girl I think will knock us out on Tuesday. Going back and listening to her “Wonderful World” several times made me a believer and a fan. I would buy this version if I could find it. It was spine tingling. As she starts off she turned her head to the side in a manner that made her look like this was her concert. Not only sounding like a star, but looking like one. If she sings like this come Tuesday, expect to see her four Tuesdays from now.

Crystal Bowersox, while very impressive her first time out with “Natural Woman”, she was even more impressive for me the second time around using her lower register on her harmonica song. I can’t think of the name of it but she was in the pocket. She doesn’t have the good looks of a Didi or Janell but this ain’t a beauty contest. And she can so what needs to be done to compete for a long time; sing.

It’s been a while since we had a 16 year old girl that had the potential to win. Ok just one year but Allison and Katie sing from two different worlds. I was thinking more along the lines of Diana Degarmo. Katie has remarkable vocal control and a supreme tone usually reserved for woman 10 years her senior. I thin k she will surprise a few. I saw her sing Kat Mcphee’s version of “Over the Rainbow” and she was absolutely superb.

What can I say about Lilly Scott? Unique amongst any contestant from any season. She doesn’t have the big voice but she has the perfect voice. I have never heard a voice quite like hers on Idol. I just can’t wait to her a full song from her.

I will say that on look backs Ashley Rodriguez continued to look more like an Alicia Keyes wanna be. That is not a good thing at all. Even singing Jordin’s “Battlefield” she sounded like a second rate Alicia. I still like her and think she will be with us for a very long time but I would like to see more of her and less of Keyes.

Didi has a few things going for her. She can sing although not such big pipes. I fear she may get swallowed up like a Brooke White. I would like to hear her sing “Terrified” in competition. She is also instantly likable and very pretty. Can she make it good for three rounds?

So who do I replace with Siobhan because I think for sure Siobhan will be in the top 12. Could America give Ashley, an early favorite the boot 3^rd round if Ashley never shows up.? Could Crystal’s vocals not over shine her apparent devil may care attitude? Will Lilly be a one trick pony? Will Janell sneak in and take another spot from my top 6?

If the boppers don’t fall in love with the guys this year, I’m thinking we could lose at least three guys before one girl gets the boot, possibly 5. All I know is I can’t wait til Tuesday to hear the ladies wail. And my most anticipated are Siobhan, Lilly, and Lacey. Let me know what lady you like best in my poll now that I’m sure you’ve had time to rewatch just like me.

Girls who didn’t make the cut who had great performances:

Shelby Dressel had a remarkable performance of “More than a Feeling”. Very strong. And she gets the 2010 Idol award for best attitude. I am sure we’ll see her again next season. This girl has guts.

Angela Martin did a bang up job with her last song "American Boy". Best I’ve heard from her. I have to think it’s more than just the singing that kept her off the show. I know her mom is still missing.

But the best single performance from a bootee was 17 year old Charity Vance’s “Gravity”. This was unbelievable. Better than the original for me. She must have made tons of other goofs to cancel out this masterpiece. I hope she comes back next year.

I’ll do my assessment of the guys tomorrow.
