American Idol: Katharine McPhee’s "Say Goodbye" "Lifetime" and “Had it All | |
|
IdolHeadEd writes I could wait till the full CD is out to review these few songs but......................I just can't!
Although Kat’s CD “Unbroken” won’t be out till January, the label has decided, and wisely so I think, to release a few of the songs off the CD to give us a dose of the new McPheever. Along with these two new songs I will also give you my take on a few more available for download right now; "Let Your Heart Sing" , "I've Got You Under My Skin" with Chris Botti, "The Prayer" with Andrea Bocelli, and "Real Love" There are two other great songs Kat recorded "Connected" and "I Will Be There For You" I won’t really get to because those aren’t available, to my knowledge, for download at this time but listen to them anyway. "Lifetime" My favorite of all the new songs. This is a very melodic and inspiring song and Kat co-wrote it. I would love for this to make the radio. This tune would garner Kat new fans and it will reinvigorate her current ones. It is fun, simple, catchy, and very different from anything top 40 today. If it catches on like it should, this will be the song that restarted her singing career. This is the kind of music that should have been on her first CD. Not only is this my favorite of this list, it is one of my all time favorite songs ever.
"Had it All" Another very different song. Written by Kara DioGuardi, sung by her as well, it is the new face of Kat’s singing career. Very upbeat fun and Katharine’s energetic side comes out. This too could be top 40 radio gold. It will be fun to see if the Kat haters change their opinion of her in the next few months because they certainly won’t be able to say she can’t sing and has crappy music. "Say Good Bye" Those of you who are fans of Kat will quickly recognize this as the song she sang on her episode of CSI:NY. A sad but haunting beautiful song. Unfortunately the only version I can show you is an amateur videotaped version. The iTunes version is pure ear candy. Absolutely one of the most beautiful songs you’ll hear this year.
That was the last of the songs currently from her CD. And should you want to buy any of them (I suggest all) please click the iTunes panel to the left and buy them from this site. "Let Your Heart Sing" This is a song Kat recorded for the movie “Tinker bell”. One of the most beautiful songs ever. I love, I’ll admit, Disney music a lot. This one goes right to the top of that list. This was also sung by two other girls but neither could bring it to life like Katharine. This song shows the many textures of Kat’s fantastic voice. Just beautiful.
"I've Got You Under My Skin" Katharine breathes new life into this 60 year old song with Chris Botti in Boston. The video tells it all. The same track is used for the iTunes version. How beautiful does she sound and look? This time it’s ear and eye candy. Again just unbelievable. Again could someone please explain to me how she lost to Taylor Hicks?
"The Prayer" This version of “The Prayer” is from the DVD/BluRay “Hit Man: David Foster and Friends.”This DVD/BluRay is worth whatever you have to spend to get it. It is for me the most fantastic version ever. Andrea has done this song with Babs, Christina, Celine, but Kat gets it the most. It is nothing less than mesmerizing. I have heard Josh Grobin sing it with Charlotte Church which is quite the event but still cannot match this version. Andrea and Kat’s voices mesh with such synchronicity and compliment. While you can’t tell by this YouTube version on the DVD/BluRay the audience gives them an instant standing ovation and when you see it you know how well deserved it is.
"Real Love" This tune was produced by Randy Jackson on his CD “Randy Jackson’s Music Club”. It is a duet with 5th season 3rd place finisher Elliott Yamin. Great melody and Kat gets to show off her funky side again. I love the texture of her lower register. She is a brilliant singer and is complimented well by Elliott.
There is no question that Katharine McPhee one of the great vocalists of her generation and David Foster (and the Idolhead) recognizes this enough to invest wholly in her. There is also no question if the rest of her CD can equal these first 3 tunes, this should be a CD of pure platinum. I believe this will bring new fans into the loop of McPheever without the need for a cure. The one thing Katharine will have to overcome is the negativity (Undeservedly so) from Idol haters and Kat haters of which there are many. This CD is surely going to change both opinions but will it be enough to send her to her rightful place among today’s Pop singers? I’m not sure. But regardless her talent as a singer will forever be changed. Look for the reviews of her CD when it comes out. I predict not one bad review. Not one. Not even from Michael Slezak.
I still maintain Katharine will be the most successful contestant off Idol. Her film and TV career are just beginning and both will dwarf any contestant before her or after. She will be a better Broadway star, should she want to be than those before her. Her success will be limited only by her imagination. This CD will mark her new dawn. And for me her biggest fan, I couldn’t be more anticipatory or happy. Is it Season 9 Yet? Idolhead Ed
