IdolHeadEd writes When Amberly was voted off this past week it was more than just another Idol going home. While it was terrible for this season, it may have been a good thing for Idol seasons to come.
Unfortunately, I have not been a good Canadian Idol watcher this season. I have too much on my plate. But I have been able to fast watch the show on YouTube. And with that I have seen the great talent that is Amberly Thiessen. When Zack said she was one of the two or three greatest finds in their history, he was not wrong. So when she was eliminated last week, I had to compose myself and write my only Canadian article of the season.
But this problem started early on with the unbalanced field of girls to guys. Unlike its cousin American Idol's 60-40 split, Canadian Idol is about a 80-85% female demo. Had this format been implemented in all seasons, we would not have Melissa O'Neal or Eva Avila as winners. In their seasons they were miles better than anyone else on the show. Although this can't be said of Amberly, she was still the best of this season.
The only good thing to come out of that will be that Americna Idol will likely not follow suit. It is almost impossible to get to know someone in the first 3 songs they sing. A perfect example would be this year's AI winner, David Cook or last year's Austrlian Idol winner Natalie Gauci. The former had to keep getting put back in by the judges. Check her out on YouTube.
Who would have thought at the end of the top 24 David Cook would win? Everyone was looking at the other David. And poor Natalie. Her Idol stay was almost over twice before she went on to prove that she is not only one of the greatest Australian Idols, but one of the best ever.
There was good logic in place making the split of half male and half female. The fact is it takes a little while to get to know these guys. The judges see much, much more of them than we ever will. They know who is good. We have to learn for ourselves. Had there been 3 more girls this season you can bet they would have gone before Amberly. And by then, maybe the female voters would have taken a bigger shine to her.
I will miss Amberly's weekly YouTube appearences but I will not be so upset now that I don't have the time to watch the show. It was telling when Theo dropped his head in disgust at the result. And when those two embraced on stage, it made me think; Instead of those two embracing in her departure, they should have been embracing in the final.
