American Idol: As Gomer would say; Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! Who went home?

American Idol IdolHeadEd writes
Who guessed the right ones tonight? I got half but was way off the next 2.

They seemed to have some audio problems tonight when the group song was sung. They make $900,000 for a 30 second spot and can’t get a good sound system. Go figure.

Tonight I think the bigger shock than who went was who stayed. And yes, I would qualify this as the first season shocker. Although it was only  a nine volt battery shock.

The first guy to go was Jason Yeager. I don’t think there was any surprise here. I’m still surprised he got to this round with no face time and no good performances. Jason may have a career singing but not for a record label. A cruise ship, maybe. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Actually I’ll bet his kid would love that. I always remember watching the Love Boat and wishing I could be Captain Stubeing’s daughter….er son. Good luck Jason. You should get bigger tips now. For those of you who don’t know, Jason was a singing waiter before he crashed and burned on Idol.

The first girl to go was Alex Lushington and although, like I mentioned in my article last night, she does not deserve to go I thought she would. I will try to see if I can get an interview with her when she gets back home. Look for it.

I always thought she should have waited a couple more years and get some miles under her belt. Plus she already lost to David Archuleta once on Star Search. I never thought she was a legitimate threat to win but I did think she might have an outside chance of making the top 12. I would like to note that it was very touching and telling that Alex went down right after she sang to give the sobbing David A. a big hug. That was classy and yes, it got me a bit misty eyed. And yes, I am an admitted wuss and I am seeking help..

The second girl to leave was the first part of our Thursday night shocker. When it got down to Alaina Whitaker and Kady Malloy, I just knew Kady’s off kilter performance last night had done her in. I hated to see her go. When Ryan said “Kady……” she kept nodding her head like Ok get it over with. Then the announcement that Alaina was going home. Well the look on Kady’s face was strangely reminiscent of Katherine McPhee’s face when Chris Daughtry hit the bricks. But then the 17 year Alaina broke down in sadness and disbelief. In only a second she was really crying and quickly said “I can’t sing… I can’t sing….” I thought this would be the first time someone going home would actually not sing. Ryan did give her that option. After a few kind words and the accompaniment of the rest of the girls, Alaina mustered up the courage to sing. And sing she did. It was even better than last night’s rendition. So in less than an hour we lost the two youngest and David A. lost his Idol School classmates.

I also never thought Aliana would make the top 12. And it goes to show you, one great performance does not an Idol make. Another fact (and this is to all you 16 & 17 year old girls thinking about trying out for Idol) is that 16/17 year old girls never do well on Idol. The only exception to this rule was in Season 3, which I still maintain was the weakest ever, when a 16 year old Diana DeGarmo was runner up and the 17 year old Jasmine Trias outlasted the vastly more talented LaToya London. That said, Alaina will do fine. She was one of the better singers in this season and at 17. I will actually miss her. Just another in a along line of Idols who go before their time.

The last evictee of the night was none other than Robbie Carrico. Robbie was actually one of my picks for the top 12 and later top 10. I found out today that that hair in his head is not his. It’s a wig. Faux hair = faux Rocker  I guess.  I always thought it looked kid of off somehow. But all is not lost. Did you catch who his current girl is? If you watched “So You Think You can Dance” last season you would have recognized her. I had to pause my DVR so as to figure out who this familiar face was. Jessica Peralta. And she looked smokin’.

Well there you have it. We are now down to the sweet 16 and that means next week we will have our top 12. I have to say I enjoyed this eviction show more than most. It was really engaging and I really felt for everyone tonight. Alaina will always be remembered for her exit. I remember when other girls got the boot from these rounds it’s was almost as if you said “So what”. Not tonight. Tonight’s results show: Grade A

Here’s a look at my top 12.

Kady Malloy survived a scare but I know this girl has the goods and think you will see where I’m coming from next week. Call me crazy but I still think she will be a part of the latest top 12.

First the boys.

1. David Archuleta
2. Michael Johns
3. David Hernandez
4. David Cook
5. Jason Castro
6. Danny Noriega (That was tough to type)

A Question: Do you think Danny will cry when he leaves?

Now the girls:

1. Carly Smithson
2. Kady Malloy
3. Ramiele Malubay (That was easy to type)
4. Kristy Lee Cook (Quit rolling your eyes)
5. Syesha Mercado
6. Asia’h Epperson
7. Brooke White

That’s the new math 7+6 =12. Live with it.

Is it Tuesday yet?

Huh?!?!

Jordin Sparks won last year and she was 17 (or at least she was when she started).
