Even though no one approached the level of Melissa’s “De’lovely”
or Eva’s “God Bless the Child”. It was pretty good. I’m still not jumpin’ out
my chair.
Standards are the songs that have stood the test of time and
for me still the best music ever written. In order to make these classics your
own, it takes that special something that eventually will make you the winner
of this show. Only two stood a chance and as it turned out, only two stood tall
tonight. It could have been worse but wasn’t bad at all. But for sure, the pimp
spot got wasted. Let’s check it out.
Carley Rae Jepsen- “My
Heart Belongs to Daddy”
What about that? I’ve never heard this one which is probably
good for Carly Rae for I have nothing to compare it to. Going first is usually
a killer but Carly Rae did not let that get in her way. This was a very good (Not
the best as Sass proclaimed). The vocal was clean and the performance was
almost perfect. I just wish she would belt it once in a while. Still, a lovely performance
and a great start to the show. Grade A-
“I Got it Bad and That
ain’t Good”
This was more like it. Carly Rae could have saved herself
for another week with this one. I totally agree with Jake. She gave her guts to
that song. And for once she let it belt. Almost pitch perfect but spot on and the
best performance of the night for me. Could she have looked any cuter? I don’t
think so. Grade A+
Jaydee Bixby- “Fever”
I ain’t getting’ one watching and listening to this. Paris
Bennett is safe once more. This was about as stiff of a performance I have ever
seen. And vocally, it was sub, sub par. One of his worst vocals to date. No matter,
he’ll still be the Idol, and Sony/BMG’s latest nightmare. Grade C-
“When You’re Smiling”
Even though I’m no Jaydee fan this was pretty good. The
dancing was as good, if not better than the singing. He hit all the notes and
gave us a bit of his belting voice. I was waiting for that last “Whole world
smiles with you!” in the big voice but it didn’t happen. Jaydee just can’t get
away from that Country sound no matter what he sings. He might take Zack’s
advice and move to Nashville.
Grade B+
Brian Melo- “Mack the
Knife”
Again I was hoping to hear Brian belt it out where the song
demands it but he laid low. He missed a few notes but he covered the stage and
did a pretty good job. I was hoping for more but he was the best of the guys
hands down. That being said, Clay Aiken has nothing to worry about. Grade B+
“Feelin’ Good”
The last time we heard this tune both folks sang it the same
round and both went home the next night. That would be round 2 of American Idol
6, Nick Pedro and Leslie Hunt. But with this performance, I think the same fate
will not await Brian. Although he strained a little here and there he cover
this well. I’m not as in love with it as the judges but it was his best of the night.
Grade A
Dwight D’eon- “I Get a kick out of You”
Horribly off key, this song was mortally wounded and so I
think is Dwight’s stay after tonight. He started off pretty good but faded fast.
It was not hard to tell he wasn’t having much fun out there with this. We didn’t
either. Grade D+
“Unforgettable”
UN- fortunately, this was forgettable and the quicker the better.
This song was done 10 times better by a ventriloquist dummy a few weeks back on
“America’s
Got Talent”. And when I say better I can’t begin to exaggerate how much better.
He was never in the pocket on this one. This could and should be Dwight’s last
night on Canadian Idol 5. Jake, I’m with you all the way here. Grade D-
I wouldn’t say tonight was close the level of any of the previous
Standards nights on AI or CI. American Idol 5 still ranks for me the best Idol
show ever. And the last two Canadian Idol standards nights were exemplary. So
tonight’s offering paled in comparison, I’m afraid. Had
we had Matt, Martha Joy, and Greg to go along with Carly Rae, the imagination
just soars. In fact if Matt and Martha were still here, they could well have
outshined Greg and Carly Rae. But alas, we have a stunted season and we have to
deal with who we have left.
I think it’s pretty clear that Dwight was vastly outshined
by everyone tonight, thus utterly wasting the pimp spot. But it was Dwight’s
pimp spot turn so to speak. But joining Dwight I think will be judge favorite Brian. That
is unless Ben starts counting down from who will be here next week and they don’t
have a bottom 2.
Zack has picked the winner each of the last two years before
the final. I think he will miss it this year. Even though Brian deserves to be
in the final, I think he will only last one more week and it will be no fault
of his own. It looks like Carly Rae and Jaydee as predicted. And really if
Carly Rae is not there this will be the worst final in Idol history. Can you
even imagine a Dwight/ Jaydee final? Heaven help us all.
Is it Monday Yet?
