From all reports it does not sound good for Kelly.
I made mention of Kelly’s new song in my most recent article
and it wasn’t that positive of a mention. That is an uncommon thing for me when
it comes to Kelly. Now reading all that has come out makes me wonder if she has
had enough or is having a breakdown. Personally I hope not.
It’s one thing to stick to your guns but another to cut off
your nose to spite your face. It sounds like Kelly is about to do the latter.
Clive Davis offered Kelly $10 million to scrap her new CD and get back with the
folks who helped her with “Breakaway”. Can one bad CD ruin a recording artists’
career? Not when the artist is established and has given the public a good
taste of their talent. Kelly has done this with “Breakaway” so I don’t think
even if this CD tanks it will destroy her. But seriously, why take a chance.
Clive may be an old fuddy duddy but he knows what he is talking about.
Obviously I haven’t heard but one cut from the new CD but it
is my least favorite single so far. For one thing she doesn’t use the great
voice she has in this one. It’s more of a growly, screamer type voice. Not the
Kelly I love. But even more importantly, what could become of this is must
deeper and possibly more damaging and important. This is where Carrie Underwood
will come in mighty handy.
Should Kelly lose it and the CD flops and all kinds of bad
things can follow. This could be the case made that “See, American Idol can’t
produce real stars that last”. And the fact that Kelly is pretty much the poster
child for Idol success, this would not be good. No, not good at all. The case
will also try to be made that this is what happens when artists get that
instant stardom and “don’t have to earn it or pay their dues. They just can’t
take it.”
But who knows, all this publicity may be just that,
publicity. The CD may be another “Breakaway” for all we know. But one thing
Kelly has done which won’t do her any favors is canceling her tour. This has
some people I know pissed. There are rumors that tickets just weren’t selling. Well,
that’s the breaks. It does not look good on Kelly at all. Is she becoming a
diva? Has she lost that small town girl charm we fell in love with? We can only
hope neither is the case.
Whatever the case may be, I hope Kelly can work it out
because it is too hard to find great artists like her in today’s music. I hope there
never comes a day when I have the radio on for more than 30 minutes without hearing
a Kelly Classic.
Take my poll and let’s see how you feel.
Is it Season 7 yet?
