American Idol: A Sharp, a Flat, and Rock Week Song Choices

Idol Articles JLynne writes
FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK! It must be said that I have been obsessed with Jon Bon Jovi since the day I was born.  At 4 I had a Bon Jovi jean jacket and cowboy boots. I would stand at my mic stand singing my heart out to his songs.  At 5, I cried my eyes out for 3 weeks when Jon betrayed me and married Dorothea.  I even still think he named one of his children after me….anyway to the point.  What should our singers sing this happy rock week?  Yikes…who knows….

Rock week.  Man, wish Gina was still here, because no one left seems really apt to tackle this genre of music.  Where’s Chris Daughtry when you really need him?  Well as we know, you can’t always get what you want….  Having a listen back to some of last weeks performances, I realized that Jordin had some major note issues in the first half of her song, but did I notice?  No, because it was dang better than everyone else.

Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, U2, Guns and Roses, The Guess Who, Kansas, The Boss, Queen, Lynrd Skynrd…… All names that I think of when I think of rock.  Female wise, we’ve got Janis, Grace Slick, Heart, Pat Benatar (by a stretch)….but what should they sing?

Please Note-
*I don’t want to hear Blake or Chris sing Bon Jovi…..or anyone for that matter, because they will ruin it, ruin it!

Best Songs to get Sent Home to- hahahaha
(1) I Want You to Want Me
(2) Save Me
(3) Cryin’
(4) I Can’t Get No Satisfaction
(5) Hard Days Night
(6) Help!
(7) Free Fallin’
(8) Last Dance with Mary Jane

(1) Jordin “Whole Lotta Love” Sparks

What She Should Sing:
-“You Don’t Own Me” -Lesley Gore later covered by Joan Jett
This song is as haunting as “I Who Have Nothing” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” but also has a dynamic rock edge.  She’ll take it further than the original and the cover vocally and it’s very age appropriate.  This would be a real winner for her. I think she should start it acapella too!
-“Remember (Walking in the Sand) -the Shangrilas later covered by Aerosmith
From the rebel girl group of the sixties to the big voices Steven, this song is sexy, flirty, has variation, and a killer ending….who could ask for anything more.
-“Cryin’”-Aerosmith
Her voice could soar on this and it has such a raw, sexy snarl to it.  I think Jordin could pull it off with style.
-“Black Dog” –Led Zeppelin
Haha…seriously though, wouldn’t this just blow you a way?

What She Should Avoid:
-“Alone” – Heart- Already done once this season and already killed, I know Jordin could to it justice, but do we really need to hear her prove it?
-“Love is a Battlefield” or “We Belong”-Pat Benatar-  She already did Pat and Simon’s not a huge fan of Pat’s songs.

(2) Melinda “Stairway to Heaven” DooLittle

What She Should Sing-
-“Sweet Child of Mine” Guns n Roses-  It would be great to see her go against the grain and really let loose!
-“Getting in Tune”-The Who- This song leaves room for a lot of improv. Riffing and has quite a gospel tinge…..it is a lesser known song though…..
-“Back in the Saddle” or “Amazin”-Aerosmith-  She needs to go big to edge herself back past Jordin, Saddle would be pointed, and Amazin could be quite the vocal.
-“Somebody to Love” Jefferson Airplane- She’d have to really work something into this song to make it worth it at this stage of the person, but if anyone can, she can.

What She Should Avoid-
(3) Lakisha “Hells Bells” Whatever her last name is…..

What She Should Sing-
-“Somebody to Love” –Queen- If she really cut loose and went crazy as she could on this vocal, she could find some of the magic she had initially.  I think this is just the song to do it.
-“I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” –Stones- The judges haven’t been on her side lately, and if she starts this one off slow and than really sings the crap out of it, she could make her point.
-“It’s My Life” –Bon Jovi- It truly is “now or never” for Kiki, and this song could be up-tempo and memorable.
-“Crazy on You”-Heart- I think this could really work.
-‘Fat Bottomed Girls”-Queen- This could be her anthem and make a big statement for big, beautiful women everywhere.

What She Should Avoid-
-Anything ever done by a past Idol ever! Seriously, this girl has to back off!
-“I Put a Spell on You” CCR- Too much in the strain of “Diamonds are Forever”

(4) Blake “I Want you to Want Me” Lewis

What He Should Sing-
-         “Walk This Way” or “Sweet Emotion”-Aerosmith- he could make these songs sexy, cool, and he can get all the words out
-         “My Generation” The Who- I could so hear him on this, though there is the risk that it might not go anywhere.
-         “These Eyes”-The Guess Who- He could 311 this out, and it fits his vocal tone.
-         “Behind Blue Eyes”- The Who- A moving ballad, but he may need to go more uptempo.
-         “Hard Day’s Night”-Beatles-
-         “Don’t Stop Me Now”-Queen- This could be the return of cool Blake.
-         “What is and What Should Never Be” Led Zeppelin- My favorite Zep tune!
-         “Gloria” Van Morrison

What He Should Avoid-
-Anything 311 has covered!
-“Dust in the Wind”-Kansas or “Whiter Shade of Pale” Procal Harum- Nothing that doesn’t go anywhere.

(5) Phil  “Highway to Hell” Stacey

What He Should Sing-
-         “Pride (In the Name of Love)” or “Beautiful Day” or “With or Without You”- U2 –Phil has the best range of the guys, but getting compared to Bono could ruin him. If he keeps it all together it could be great.
-         “I Could Save the World” or “I’ll Be There For You” or “Livin’ on a Prayer”- Bon Jovi- If a guy has to sing Bon Jovi then I guess I’d rather Phil than the others.  I just hope he doesn’t destroy it.
-         -“Carry On Our Wayward Son” –Kansas- This is a good song, but might come off karaoke.

What He Should Avoid-
-“I Want You to Want Me”-Cheap Trick- hahaha
-“I Want to Know What Love Is”- Foreigner- he should avoid voices he can mimic.

(6) Chris “Livin’ on a Prayer” Richardson-

What He Should Sing-
-“I Won’t Back Down” or “Don’t Do Me Like That”or “Breakdown”–Tom Petty
If he wants to sing incorrectly then Tom Petty, god love em, I sure do, then Chris should sing Tom.  It could really work for him.
-“Sunshine of Your Love” –Cream- hmmmm…….
- “Come Together” Beatles later covered by Aerosmith
-“Save Me”-Queen- ahahaha
“Magic Carpet Ride” –Steppenwolf- THIS would be perfect!  It would get his teen votes back.
“Bad Medicine” or “You Give Love a Bad Name”- Bon Jovi- If he has to do it….
“All of My Love” –Led Zeppelin

What He Should Avoid-
-“Hard to Handle” Black Crowes

So there you have it, this is not the 6 people in America I would pick to sing my favorite type of music, but alas………there’s nothing we can do….

JLynne, That was your best "What should they sing" I was actually dreading this week, or fearing, but with those song choices it has put my mind at ease. And what great middle name songs you gave everyone. Kick ass!

The boss.
